Beauty is never the destination. It is where encounter begins.

I travelled to Ethiopia searching for stories. I returned with a question: what makes a meaningful encounter possible?

It wasn't the first time travel had left me with more questions than answers. An old woman who appeared from a muddy laneway in Sumatra once walked two lost strangers to shelter, asking for nothing. Two women in Namibia helped fix a flat tyre on a remote road and showed us, with quiet pride, the cabins they had built. A Lebanese tailor in my own Melbourne neighbourhood was maintaining his late wife's garden down to the placement of individual plants.

All of these moments were encounters, experiences between people where reality reveals itself unencumbered by walls.

And every encounter, I came to believe, began in the same way: with something that first invited my attention.

Sometimes it was an act of generosity, or a beautiful object or story, or an ordinary moment that revealed an unexpected depth.

These moments and objects – these thresholds – possessed a beauty that made me stop long enough to cross the threshold into an encounter with a world beyond my own.

The Meridian Society exists to explore those thresholds and encounters.

We believe that the beauty inherent to these thresholds – whether that be a story, a piece of craft, a place or an interaction – invites us beyond themselves and carry us towards the people, traditions and cultures from which they emerge. They become the means through which meaningful encounters  become possible.

Our collections begin not with products but with places. Each edition is developed alongside local artisans, photographers and writers whose work carries within it the heritage from which it comes.

The objects we create together are invitations, a way in.

Our first edition begins in Ethiopia.

It could only have begun there.

Beauty arrests our attention. It asks us to pause, to notice, to wonder. It awakens us to the possibility that there is something more to discover.

Beauty invites us to cross thresholds. They take many forms—craft, stories, travel, photography, conversation—but each carries us beyond itself towards another person, another place, or another way of seeing the world.

Every threshold points beyond itself. The destination is never simply the object, the journey or the place. It is the encounter that changes how we see the world—and perhaps ourselves.
